Mr. Tom Kitt TD, Minister of State for Overseas Development and Human Rights, left today for a five day visit to Timor Leste. The Minister's schedule includes meetings with President José Alexandre "Xanana" Gusmao, Prime Minister Dr. Mari Alkatiri and senior government officials. The Minister will also visit Ireland Aid funded programmes and meet with NGOs and International Agencies.
The overall objective of the Ireland Aid programme for development cooperation between Ireland and Timor Leste is to assist the Government and civil society in achieving the vision set out in their National Development Plan (NDP), and to contribute to poverty reduction through the delivery of essential services, institutional capacity building, and the strengthening of governance.

On leaving, Minister of State Kitt said:

" I am very much looking forward to this, my first, visit to Timor Leste. The Irish Government has contributed over €7 million in assistance to date and we were instrumental in helping its transition to becoming a Democratic Republic. I know that many people in Ireland have followed closely and continue to be very supportive of Ireland's deepening engagement with Timor Leste, and, I hope that my visit will further strengthen our ties with that country."
