Dili, 26 October 2020 -The Timor Leste-Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha de Timor Leste - CVTL) has received the donation in the provision of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) from the Japanese Government, Woodside Company, and ARC) through International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The PPE consists of N95 mask 80 boxes, goggles 100 pairs, hand sanitizer 75 boxes, surgical cap 100 boxes, surgical gloves 30 boxes, surgical masks 140 boxes, anti-pollutant rubber boots 100 pairs, infrared temperature gun 2 units, coverall with hoods 100 units, and face shield 100 pcs. These generous contributions have helped CVTL to mobilize its staffs and volunteers to support the Timor-Leste Government in curbing the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
“We are so grateful to have these PPE from the donors. Even though the COVID-19 case in Timor Leste has not resulted in death, but with this PPE will assist the CVTL staffs and volunteers educate the community in how to prevent it from spreading and this donation makes our work much easier and safe. Because in the neighbour's countries, there are more and more cases of COVID-19, “said CVTL President, Madalena Hanjam.
In disease outbreaks, engaging with and providing timely information to the most exposed communities is the best way to prepare and help people protect themselves and loved ones from COVID-19.
“CVTL continues to collaborate with the Red Cross staff and volunteers to disseminate information in a national education campaign on COVID-19 by visiting neighbourhoods, villages, and hamlets to raise awareness on key themes such as hygiene information and the importance of maintaining physical distancing. Not to mention, using radio and social media to amplify their effort. Where possible, Red Cross has also established handwashing facilities in key public areas such as government offices, schools, and other public places," adds Mss. Hanjam.

The role of IFRC in Timor Leste is to support to CVTL as an auxiliary to the government with the guidance of 7 principles (humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality). In response to COVID-19, Timor-Leste Red Cross (CVTL) has been working in close collaboration with the government specifically the Ministry of Health to prepare communities preventing the spread of the virus.
CVTL acknowledged the contribution of Timor-Leste Government, the Indonesian Government, and the Indonesian Red Cross, and Donors (Japanese Government, Woodside) in facilitating the cross-border goods transfer. The handover Ceremony participated by the ICRC Representative in Timor Leste, Mr Joao Martins, CVTL Secretary-General, Anacleto Bento Fereirra, CVTL staffs, and volunteers.
