Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste (CVTL) has been supporting communities in Timor-Leste for Dengue Prevention for many years. Today, CVTL staff and volunteers went to the village of Mertuto, Gleno, in Ermera Municipality to do a socialisation as well as a dengue prevention with a rubbish clean up.

At present, (as of 4/3/20) there have been 204 cases of dengue in Ermera Municipality.

CVTL President, Madelana Hanjam said today “Dengue is a serious disease caused by mosquitos with no cure. It is important that everyone is aware of this disease and what to do in your daily lives to prevent it. Remember Prevention is better than cure!”

What is dengue?

Dengue is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected female Aedes Agypty mosquito. Symptoms appear in 3–14 days after the infective bite. Dengue fever is a flu-like illness that affects infants, young children and adults. There is no specific treatment for dengue fever. Severe dengue is a potentially lethal complication but early clinical diagnosis and careful clinical management by experienced physicians and nurses often save lives. Dengue flourishes in urban poor areas, suburbs and the countryside.

The President of the CVTL said. "The major symptoms are High Fever (40°C ) is usually accompanied by at least two of the following symptoms: Headaches, Pain behind eyes, Nausea, vomiting, Joint, bone or muscle pains, rash. If you have at least two of these symptoms together, then you need to visit the clinic and Doctor – do not wait. It is important to have a blood test”

“We encourage everyone in Timor-Leste to be pro-active today, and to take the following steps to help prevent Dengue. Together we can prevent Dengue,” Ms Hajib concluded.
