Thailand: Over 100 schools in Songkhla remain closed due to flooding

BANGKOK, 2 November 2010 (NNT) - The Education Ministry has reported that over 100 schools in Songkhla remain closed in light of heavy rain and flashfloods. Meanwhile, the costs of repair for all schools damaged by floods nationwide could reach 450 millions baht.

Education Minister Chinavorn Boonyakiat said after an executive committee meeting that all schools in the nation had been advised to be on high alert against floods, particularly those in the southern provinces. He further noted that schools could be used as temporary shelters in case of emergency.

Over 100 schools in Songkhla have reportedly been closed due to floods. The opening day has also been delayed by up to 15 days or until the water levels in the areas have receded.

Meanwhile, the economic cabinet has given a green light to flood-relief measures proposed by the education ministry, particularly the setting up of the Coordinating Flood Relief Operation Centers aimed at assisting victims.
