Thailand: Drought in northeast reported severe

MAHA SARAKHAM, 20 April 2010 (NNT) - Water resources are reported to be very scarce in a number of provinces in the northeastern region of the country upon the intense drought crisis while the authorities have been distributing fresh water for consumption for local residents.

Troops distributed 12,000 liters of fresh water to 400 households of residents in Tambon Khwao Rai of Kosum Phisai district in Maha Sarakham province since water resources are not adequate for consumption.

There are more than 10,000 residents in 20 villages suffering from the drought crisis at Tambon Khwao Rai alone.

However, sales of air-conditioners and fans in the city of Maha Sarakham are increasing as more than 10 of the appliances are sold on a daily basis in addition to some special promotions arranged to lure customers.

Meanwhile, the situation at Buri Ram province is also reported to be severe as water is drying up. Farmlands are heavily damaged while crops are dying. Villagers can catch aquatic animals for consumption but the amount is not enough for sale.
