Overview
Thailand is largely protected from typhoons due to land masses in the east and does not lie on a tectonic plate boundary. These two aspects help insulate the country from many of the impacts of disasters. However, the country is not immune to natural hazards. Floods, storms, landslides and droughts are the most common hazards and annual occurrences, though not necessarily requiring a major response.
In 2011, Thailand faced one of the country’s worst flooding, 65 out of 77 provinces including Bangkok were flooded, causing over 800 deaths and affected more than 14 million people.
