Tak beefs up drought relief as water shortages worsen

TAK, 26 February 2016 (NNT) – Tak Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office has handed urgent help to Walay Sub-district in Phob Phra District in response to complaints of severe water shortages.

Tak governor Somchai Hatayatanti has instructed chief of the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office Prapatsorn Nuampipat to speed up the assistance program for villagers following a report that the water level in the local reservoir continues to drop at an alarming pace. The crisis will begin to affect the whole province in April.

Mrs. Prapatsorn said the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Center Region 9 in Phitsanulok had sent high-power water pumps to the affected areas. The equipment can draw water from a distance of up to three kilometers and can fetch as much as 3,000 cubic meters of water per second.

The pumps are siphoning water from the Moei River onto the 93-rai reservoir in Walay Sub-district. The supplies are used for consumption, agriculture and industries.
