Sigi flood victims build temporary shelters

Ruslan Sangadji, The Jakarta Post, Sigi, Central Sulawesi

Flood victims in Sigi regency, Central Sulawesi, are building temporary accommodation before they move into new housing.

All the temporary houses, which are wooden constructions, are in Bolapapu and neighboring villages.

“Villagers are still in need of construction materials,” Alia Idrus, head of the Indonesian National Youth Committee of Sigi, said on Friday.

Floods that hit Bolapapu village on Dec. 3, 2011, caused landslides and brought trees down, leaving six residents dead and forcing hundreds of residents in three hamlets to flee.

Sigi Legislative Council Speaker Budi Luhur Larengi told The Jakarta Post on Friday that the Sigi administration had plotted a new residential area in Kulawi district for Bolapapu villagers who were affected by the floods. (mtq)
