PM urges related agencies to help flood victims down south

BANGKOK, 4 January 2012 (NNT) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra has assigned the Defence Ministry to send flood relief assistance to the South and the Interior Ministry to assess the flood damage and rehabilitation costs.

Defence Ministry spokesman Thanathip Sawangsaeng says that Ms Yingluck has told Defence Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha to urgently send flood relief teams to the South. He adds that General Yuthasak has ordered the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department and 21 other agencies to give help in Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Patthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces.

The officials have been evacuating flood victims to temporary shelters while injured and sick people have been sent to hospitals. Flood relief bags have also been distributed to victims.

Meanwhile, the Premier also ordered Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit to assess the damage caused by the flood and prepare rehabilitation measures.
