Over 2 million people nationwide endure flooding

BANGKOK, 29 September 2013 (NNT) - Two million people in 30 provinces have been affected by floods since 17 September 2013. The Royal Irrigation Department has confirmed major dams can take more water.

Director-General of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Chatchai Phromlert said the situation in five of the 30 flood-affected provinces had started to improve. The department was urgently surveying damages caused by the floods in order to assist and compensate the locals, Mr Chatchai said.

As of 27 September 2013, major dams have the combined water volume of 47.3 billion cubic meters or 67% of their capacity. The dams can still accommodate more than 22.8 billion cubic meters of water during this rainy season, according to the Royal Irrigation Department.

The Royal Irrigation Department also clarified that it had managed water in various dams in accordance with the rainfalls while also taking into account the amount of rain to be preserved for use during the coming dry season.
