Nakhon Si Thammarat seeks 2 bn THB for long-term flood prevention

NAKHON SI THAMMARAT, 5 January 2012 (NNT) – The Mayor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipality seeks the government’s approval for a budget of 2 billion baht to prevent repetitive flooding in the province.

Mr Chaowat Senpong, Mayor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipality, stated that a budget of 2 billion baht from the government would benefit the effort to resolve the flood problem and prevent future catastrophes in the area. He affirmed that this sum of money, if approved, would help prevent the municipality’s financial district from flooding for as long as 50 years.

The situation in many parts of Nakhon Si Thammarat has returned to normal while local authorities have collaborated with the provincial irrigation office to bring in 19 pumps to drain water from the area. It is expected that the flood water will dry out within two days, provided that there is no more rain.

The flood damage within Nakhon Si Thammarat Municipality alone is estimated at more than 100 million baht. The municipality is set to hold a ‘Big Cleaning Day’ event this Saturday to deal with the post-flood garbage.
