BANGKOK, 28 May 2012 (NNT) - The Meteorological Department has issued an alert for heavy rains and gusty winds, which could occur throughout Thailand during this couple of days.

A monsoon trough is reportedly moving across the upper part of the northern and northeastern regions of Thailand while the southwestern monsoon is now strengthening in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. As a consequence, medium to heavy rains are expected across the country from May 28-29.

Residents of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae, Nan, Lampang, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi, Trat, Ranong and Phang Nga provinces have been cautioned of the possibility of heavy rains and flash floods.

Waves as high as 2-3 meters have been forecasted in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. Fishermen should take precautions when leaving the mainland whilst small vessels should remain on the shore during the period.
