Interior Minister orders provincial governors to prepare for flood beforehand

BANGKOK, 20 January 2011 (NNT)-Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit has instructed every provincial governor to gear up for flood prevention measures before the rainy season begins.

The order has been circulated to every Provincial Office around the country to urge the governors to start preparing flood prevention this year. Sewers will be unclogged while canals as well as rivers will be dredged up to increase their capacity to hold an excessive amount of rain water also expected this year.

Other projects including construction of flood walls, drafting of evacuation plans and improvement of warning systems are also underway. Governors are expected to submit respective prevention plan to the Ministry of Interior for consideration.

Meanwhile, similar preparations are underway in Bangkok as sewers and tunnels have been frequently monitored and cleared of garbage to allow the water to flow into the river easily and faster. Mr. Yongyuth said the government is ready to help relieve the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA)’s burden by taking care of the cleanliness in some canals or rivers agreed upon by the BMA.
