CHIANG RAI, 15 May 2014 (NNT) – Close to 800 aftershocks have occurred in the North, following last week's magnitude 6.3 earthquake that struck Chiang Rai.
According to the Meteorological Department's Seismological Bureau, a magnitude 3.8 aftershock shook Chiang Rai on Wednesday morning – the epicenter was located in Phan district, where the original magnitude 6.3 earthquake also originated. The dept of the epicenter was 3 kilometers.
According to the center, 794 aftershocks had occurred up until Wednesday. Of these, 8 were of magnitudes of 5.0 to 5.9 and 29 were of magnitudes 4.0 to 4.9.
Also on Wednesday, faculty and students at Chiang Rai Rajabhat University held a press announcement apologizing for the online posting of an image allegedly of a female university student having fallen down the stairs and broken her neck during last week's earthquake. According to university personnel and students, the picture was a prank by the student in the picture. She has been put on probation and ordered to do social service.
