Cabinet to spend Bt11bil on flood relief

BANGKOK, 4 January 2012 (NNT) – The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a budget of 11 billion baht for flood rehabilitation. Of this sum, 613 million baht is allocated for the Ministry of Defence to repair military hardware.

Government Spokesperson Thitima Chaisaeng announced the conclusions of the Cabinet meeting today at Government House. She said the Cabinet had agreed with a committee for flood relief chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Yongyuth Vichaidit to spend 11 billion baht for flood victims. Five billion baht of the budget is for transportation, 137 million baht for religious places, 1.3 billion baht for education and 3.2 billion baht for water resources and irrigation.

In addition, the Cabinet approved 613 million baht for the Ministry of Defence, 341 million baht of which is for the military hardware damaged by the floods and 272 million baht for the equipment broken from the military's relief operations.

The government spokesperson added that the prime minister had stressed the transparency of budget spending and assigned inspector generals to take part in the process.
