The report aims to provide an overview of migration patterns and mobility in Tajikistan, drawing on the latest available data from national and international sources covering the period from July to December 2024. It focuses on the most recent migration situation in the country, including migrant stocks and flows, the number of residence permits issued and remittance volumes. Furthermore, the report explores recent dynamics of irregular migration, analyzing the impact of major events on human mobility and migratory movements during this period. More specifically, the report was conducted through desk research and a quantitative analysis of relevant primary and secondary sources. The MTM team collected and processed data provided by the Ministry of Labour, Migration and Employment of the Population of Tajikistan (MoLMEP), along with other requested documents relevant to the analysis of mobility outflows and inflows, and labour migration to and from the country during the last six months of 2024 (with most figures representing annual totals). Additional data was gathered from the Bureau of National Statistics of the Agency for Strategic Planning and Reforms of the Republic of Kazakhstan (NBS), the Border Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the World Bank (WB) and other sources (please see references for a full list of sources used).
During this reporting period, migrant stock in Tajikistan was recorded at 276,777 individuals (43% males, 57% females). In the same year, an estimated 514,478 Tajik nationals were residing abroad (57% males, 43% females). Furthermore, a notable increase (23%) in Chinese labour migration was observed from the first half to the second half of 2024, linked to key industrial projects in Tajikistan. As of September 2024, a total of 547,205 labour migrants had returned to Tajikistan (73% males, 27% females). This represents a 13 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2023 (483,271). Report also highlights the Representative Office of the MoLMEP in the Russian Federation received significant number (58,252) of appeals and inquiries from labour migrants in the Russian Federation. This represents a 251 per cent increase compared to 2023 received appeals (16,600).
