High temperatures mid-July led to rapid melting of snow and glacier ice that resulted in mudslides in GBAO and Rasht District of Tajikistan.

Furthermore, on 24 July 2015 heavy rains combined with melting of glaciers caused mudflows in Tajikabad District, DRD.

As the heatwave continues through August, the situation is subject to rapid degradation, with multiple locations being affected throughout the country simultaneously, mainly in hard to reach areas with communities who are already facing multiple deprivations;

On 21 July, the Government of Tajikistan declared a State of Emergency and has officially called upon the international community resident in the country for support and assistance.Since the beginning of the emergency, UNICEF has been working with the Government and partners to deliver emergency supplies to meet the needs of the affected population. Among them water purification tablets to provide access to drinking water in affected areas for about 5,000 people for a month; 1,440 water containers of different capacities - 1 per family and more than 1,000 blankets for infant and adults were distributed [detailed list below].

Additionally, the country office placed an order for 50,000 tablets of zinc and 8 emergency health kits for rural health clinics providing services to more than 8,000 population. Altogether the newly ordered items are worth $ 4,500.

UNCEF, jointly with REACT partners, conducted an Initial Rapid Assessment in Rasht district to identify the needs of the affected population, inclusively the displaced ones that were settled in the camp.

UNICEF team (including two UNICEF Emergency Focal Points (Education Specialist and Health Specialist) and two Field Monitors were deployed to GBAO and Rasht District to monitor the situation as well as assure HPM;

The mudslides damaged roads in the affected districts of GBAO, as a result all traffic being re-routed through detour roads to/from the locations. This continues to cause some delays with access to districts for further assessment and monitoring of the situation.

On 29th of July authorities of Rasht district appealed to REACT with a request to support with fuel only; on 3 August authorities of Rasht district appealed to UNICEF with a request to support with WASH (including hygiene kits) supplies and other non-food items.

As of August 10th, a WASH specialist has joined the UNICEF country team for 3 months to support with humanitarian assessment, response and capacity building.

REACT Team has issued Relief & Early Recovery Plan for $ 3.8 million that includes almost $ 600,000 of UNICEF requested funds to meet the needs of the affected children and women.
