In April 20th, 2017, UNDP Tajikistan in cooperation with the Local Executive Authorities of Khatlon Province officially handed over 18 three-roomed single-unit houses to the to 18 households, whose houses were destroyed by flood and mudslides in Sari Chashma Jamoat of Shamsiddin Shohin (Shurobod) district in 2014.
In July 2014 UNDP Tajikistan’s Disaster Risk Management Programme commenced “Floods Recovery to Resilience” project to address critical recovery needs and increase social and physical resilience in severely flood-affected areas in Sari Chashma jamoat, Sh. Shohin district (with UNDP’s own funding). The holistic approach to livelihood recovery and infrastructure rehabilitation was adopted to ensure resilience of disaster affected communities in the future.
Immediately after the disaster struck the affected population of this jamoat was provided with high quality 20 MT of wheat seeds, 10 MT of mineral fertilizers, 101 dairy cows, 45 tons of combined fodder and a tractor with a trailer to support their livelihood recovery.
Since the destroyed houses were located in disaster prone areas, the Government allocated 44 ha of land in safer area for relocation purposes. As a result of close cooperation between UNDP and the local authorities in Nosiri Bobo village of Sari Chashma Jamoat 18 new houses were constructed to provide housing for 158 people (37 families), including 70 women. As part of critical infrastructure rehabilitation, 20 km of jamoat roads and a drinking water supply system were rehabilitated. For soil stabilization and to reduce the risk of landslides, 13,000 tree seedlings of different species were planted in slopes.For power supply, a new transformer sub-station was installed, with funding of the Government of Japan.
Mr. Jan Harfst, UNDP Country Director, and Mr. Rajabali Rajabov, Deputy Chairman of Local Executive Authorities of Khatlon Province participated in the handover ceremony.
The Country Director of the United Nations Development Programme in Tajikistan, Mr. Jan Harfst congratulated people of Bobo Nosirov, highlighted “Due to the climatic variabilities and extreme weather events Sari-Chashma jamoat faced several natural disasters that have caused a lot of damages. Today I’m really glad that we can hand over new houses to the hardworking people of Sarichashma who were severely affected by floods, to help them fully recover from losses incurred back in 2014”.
Mr. Rajabali Rajabov, the Deputy Chairman of the Khatlon Province in his opening remarks stated that “In 2014, when the flood occurred, I remember the face of people full of sorrow and desperate. Today I’m pleased to see everyone very happy and delighted”.
