Germany, Japan and Switzerland to support jointly Tajikistan elections

PRESS RELEASE

In late February 2000, Tajikistan will hold parliamentary elections. These will be the first elections since concluding the General Agreement on the Establishment of Peace and National Accord in Tajikistan which was signed on June 27, 1997.

Germany attaches particular importance to these elections for the political development of the country and for the internal reconciliation process. For this reason Germany welcomes the deployment of an observer mission which will be carried out jointly by the OSCE and UN. We expect that the Government of Tajikistan will fully support the mission and see to it, that the elections will we secure and according to international standards democratic and fair.

After consultations with the Special Representative of the Secretary General to Tajikistan, Mr. Petrov, Germany, Japan, Switzerland will cover the costs for the UN participation which will total US $250,000.00. As her share Germany has pledged to donate US $100,000.00.
