CHF 59,406 has been allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the National Society in delivering immediate assistance to some 213 families (1,278 people) and to replenish emergency stocks. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.
Summary: As a result of heavy rains on 11-12 June 2011, floods hit Sughd province in the northern part of Tajikistan, affecting 7 villages in 3 districts of the province.
According to the preliminary data received from the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan`s Sughd province branches, the number of disaster affected dwellings in three districts is more than 213 houses (or some 1,278 people), out of which 99 houses have been badly damaged and 35 houses totally destroyed; internal roads, drinking water supply system, irrigation water supply line, electricity lines, farmland and gardens have been devastated and many domestic animals killed in Asht, Ghonchi and Panjikent districts of Sughd province.
The National Society will assist 87 most affected households through the distribution of basic non-food items to help them cope with the consequences of floods. Based on previous experience in similar situations, the National Society also plans to conduct hygiene promotion activities for all affected families (around 213 families).
This operation is expected to be implemented over three months, and will therefore be completed by 14 September; a Final Report will be made available in three months from the end of the operation (by 14 December 2011).
