KURGAN TEPPA [ACTED News] - Every year as a result of natural disasters in Tajikistan hundreds of people are dying the majority of which are children. One of the problems is children’s lack of knowledge with regards to disaster preparedness. Many children do not know how to protect themselves in the event of a natural disaster. ACTED has established education classes for schoolchildren on disaster preparedness in the scope of its Asian Development Bank-funded Community participatory flood management project. Classes include simulation drills on earthquakes, mudflows, drawing contests, poetry composition, theatre shows and information on relevant hazards. 2,275 schoolchildren have benefited from these disaster preparedness classes.
