Vulnerable families in north-west Syria in desperate need following devastating earthquakes

Attachments

Human Concern International is currently responding to the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey and north-west Syria on February 6, 2023 as a category 7.7 in the Kahramanmaras province at 04:17 and a 7.5 magnitude earthquake at 13:24. Although the nearest impacted major city is Gaziantep, Turkey, the impact of the devastation is being felt most by the nearly 4.1 million IDPs and refugees in Syria who depend on daily humanitarian aid

The scale of the destruction caused by these earthquakes has been profound. It is estimated that over 12,000 people have died. Survivors have been left with no access to essential services and resources.

HCI’s team based in Gaziantep has immediately mobilised to evaluate the conditions on the ground and assess the dire needs faced by families. While we are actively cooperating with agencies in Turkey, assessments indicate that the largest humanitarian needs are in Syria, specifically in Idlib, Aleppo, and Jandairis. HCI continues to coordinate with a variety of local stakeholders to identify populations with the highest need.

At the moment, HCI is providing ready-to-eat food packages, dry food supplies, clean water, basic medical assistance, and materials for emergency shelters. We are acutely aware of the assistance that these families require as a result of the difficult winter weather. Priority is given to people whose homes have been damaged and mothers and children whose lives have been shattered.

To date, we have raised more than $500,000. We are committed to provide immediate and long-term assistance to the affected families as they seek to recover and rebuild their livelihoods.

We are calling on the international community, and particularly Canada, to dedicate more resources towards relief efforts in Turkey and Syria.

In addition, we applaud the bravery of the humanitarian workers who are risking their lives to rescue survivors from the rubble. HCI stands ready to collaborate with key stakeholders to provide a comprehensive response.

About Human Concern International

Human Concern International is Canada’s first and oldest Muslim charity. We began our operations in 1979 in Pakistan, assisting Afghan refugees fleeing the war. Since then, we have delivered over $200 million of aid across the globe. We are committed to empowering communities to move themselves from crisis to sustainability through emergency response, education, healthcare, livelihoods, water and sanitation, and child sponsorship programs. For HCI, charity starts at home, and we uplift our community in both times of need and celebration.
