Syria

Two years on from the earthquake, Syria demands solidarity

Today, we recognise the two years that have passed since Syria and Turkey were struck by the worst earthquake in 20 years. 55,000 people were killed in the disaster, and millions of lives were devastated.

In a region scarred by years of conflict and trauma, the earthquake still stands as a critical moment of suffering.

In the face of immense tragedy, Syrians displayed incredible resilience. Communities banded together across borders and all corners of civil society stepped up to ensure support and protection for those impacted.

Two years on however, and two months since the fall of the Assad regime, Syrians are suffering now more than ever. 70% of the region is decimated, with crucial infrastructure expected to take years to rebuild. The regime’s continued assault of its own citizens in their homes has left entire cities empty and crumbling.

Syrians have shown that they are determined to lead the response to the crisis they face. The international community must take action to support them in their challenge:

Sanctions need to be lifted.

Demining needs to be prioritised.

And increased funding for recovery programmes needs to be put in place immediately.

This is a moment of great change for Syria. After decades of enduring constant tragedy, there is finally a road to a brighter future, and we must not hinder this redevelopment.

For so long, the world has turned its back on Syrians. Now is the time for us to show the solidarity that they deserve.
