Syrian Arab Republic: IDP Spontaneous Returns (May 2023) [EN/AR/TR]

In May 2023, the humanitarian community recorded some 2,800 spontaneous IDP return movements across Syria, which was 73 percent less than the return movements that were tracked in April. Around 2,400 of these movements (90 per cent) occurred within Idleb and Dar’a governorates.

At the sub-district level, in Dar’a governorate As-Sanamayn sub-district received the highest number of spontaneous return movements in May, with around 1,100 returns.

In Idleb Governorate, Jisr-Ash-Shugur subdistrict received around 400 movements, while Kafr Nobol sub-district received 300 spontaneous return movements.

At the community level, in Dar’a governorate, Jidya community received around 600 returns; the highest number of spontaneous return movements in May while Hara community received 500 returns. In Idleb governorate, Kafr Oweid community received around 300 spontaneous return movements, while Idleb and Balyun communities received a total of around 200 spontaneous returns.

  • The returns refer to IDP spontaneous returns and do not necessarily follow the global definitions of ‘Returnees’ or durable solutions for IDPs.

  • The IDP spontaneous returns include IDPs returning to their homes or communities of origin.

  • The IDP spontaneous returns term used in this monthly report refers to the return movements occurred in the reported period only.

  • The process of verification is based on triangulation of verified IDP spontaneous returns reported by different mechanisms and further examined by the IDP TF through cross-checking population numbers from previous years.
