BACKGROUND
As-Sweida, Dar’a and Quneitra Governorates are located in the south of Syria, and constitute around 6 per cent of the country's total area.
These three governorates are home to roughly 1.67 million people, accounting for approximately 7 per cent of Syria's overall population. The area borders Rural Damascus Governorate to the north and Jordan to the south, with one official border crossing, Naseeb, located in Dar’a Governorate. Dar’a and Quneitra Governorates were directly affected by the conflict, while As-Sweida was indirectly affected. The majority of the southern population relies on agriculture and livestock rearing as their primary source of income. Industrial activities are virtually non-existent, but small-scale commercial and business endeavors are present.
