OVERVIEW
As of 21 January, the ceasefire agreement between the Government of Syria and the Syrian Democratic forces (SDF) announced on 18 January continues to largely hold, resulting in a relative stabilisation of security conditions across Aleppo. The reduction in active hostilities has enabled continued returns of displaced individuals, although at a reduced rate, resulting in the return of an estimated78 per cent of individuals displaced at the onset of the hostilities in Aleppo. The recent reduced rate of returns reflects widespread concerns regarding the presence of mines and threats to security present in homes and streets.
In parallel, significant new displacement was reported in North-East Syria (NES), particularly from Ar-Raqqa and Al-Hasakeh Governorates. Displacement during this period reflects concerns of potential clashes between the SDF and government forces, particularly among those residing near SDF prisons and military headquarters. In the past three days, the number of IDPs residing in Al-Hasakeh has increased by approximately 129,000 individuals (5,725 recorded 18 January), primarily towards the northern countryside of Al-Hasakeh. An estimated41,186 IDPs are currently residing in collective centres in Al-Hasakeh, and are in urgent need of food, shelter, multi-purpose cash assistance, and non-food items including mattresses, cooking utensils, blankets, and lighting.
