Aleppo Governorate has been affected by significant humanitarian impacts following an escalation of hostilities that began on 6 January 2026 in the northern neighbourhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah, and Bani Zaid in Aleppo City. On 9 January, the Syrian Ministry of Defence announced a ceasefire, and as of 11 January, Syrian government forces have taken control of the affected neighbourhoods, and reports indicate a reduction in active hostilities. As a result, roughly 29 thousand IDPs have returned to their homes, while approximately 119 thousand remain displaced. The majority of the displaced population are sheltering with host families, however 2,440 people are in collective centres, tents/makeshift shelters and in unfinished buildings. Key informants report that priority needs are cash assistance, food, non-food items, and shelter assistance. Movement between northeast Syria and interior areas remains restricted, with the Deir Hafer to Aleppo road and the Tabqa to Athriya road reported as closed or inaccessible, affecting civilian movement and supply routes. Flights to and from Aleppo International Airport remain suspended.
