Aleppo Governorate is experiencing a humanitarian crisis following a significant escalation in hostilities that began on 6 January 2026 in the northern neighbourhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah, and Bani Zaid in Aleppo City. The escalation has been associated with the disruption of essential services, population displacement, and the closure of key access routes, including the suspension of flights to and from Aleppo International Airport.
Movement between northeast Syria and interior areas has been severely restricted due to the complete closure of the Deir Hafer to Aleppo road and the Tabqa to Athriya road at the Al Zakiyah junction, significantly disrupting civilian movement and commercial activity.
Authorities have announced curfew and evacuation orders in the affected neighbourhoods. In the early hours of 9 January 2026, the Syrian Ministry of Defence declared a ceasefire in Sheikh Maqsoud, Ashrafiyah, and Bani Zaid. Later the same day, in eastern rural Aleppo, limited hostilities and reported military mobilisations by both sides were recorded, alongside the displacement of a small number of families.
The situation remains fluid, and DTM continues to monitor developments.
