Attachments

This report is produced by OCHA Syria on behalf of the Humanitarian Country Team (HCT). It covers the period from 3-9 March 2023. The next report will be issued on or around 16 March

HIGHLIGHTS

  • As of 9 March, 100 collective shelters are accommodating earthquake-affected people in Aleppo City.

  • Aleppo Operations Room members are preparing a long-term response plan.

  • The fluctuation in the number of collective shelters and their residents is creating challenges for the Shelter and Non-Food Items (SNFI) and Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector response as well as protection and health risks.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Since the first earthquake of 6 February, 77,234 families, or 364,854 people, have been newly displaced in Aleppo (38,649 families), Lattakia (36,312), Homs (748), Tartous (656), Hama (346), Rural Damascus (298), As-Sweida (83), Deir-ez-Zor (68), Dar’a (64), and Damascus (10).

On 7 March, several airstrikes were reported early in the morning around the Aleppo Airport forcing it to shut down until further notice. The closure could have severe humanitarian implications for people in Aleppo, one of the worst earthquake-impacted governorates in Syria. All flights carrying earthquake aid had to be diverted to either Damascus or Lattakia. The closure has also resulted in the suspension of all flights from Aleppo for the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS).

The continuous change in the number of collective shelters and their residents, which to date has reached 100 shelters for around 48,431 people in Aleppo City, constitutes a serious challenge for the humanitarian response. This includes shelter rehabilitation works and installation of additional WASH facilities to ensure basic hygiene and minimum privacy requirements are met.
