From 31 December 2025 to 2 January 2026, heavy snowstorms hit northern Syria, particularly Aleppo, Idleb and Al-Hasakeh governorates, resulting in fatalities and damage.
According to UN OCHA as of 6 January, a total of 158 000 people were affected in 90 IDP sites across Aleppo, Idleb and Al-Hasakeh. OCHA also reports that approximately 785 shelters have been completely damaged and 4,116 have been partially damaged. Additionally, several roads were blocked and access to the IDP sites were cut off for several days.
Drier conditions are expected on 08 January, while 09 January bring some precipitation to the east of Syria, followed by moderate rain or snowfall across the country on 10 January.
Immediate priorities include fuel and heating supplies, emergency shelter repairs and tent replacements, winter NFI distributions, and road clearance to restore access for life-saving services. Out of USD 112 million required for life-saving winterisation assistance according to the shelter cluster, only USD 29 million has been received, leaving a 74% gap.
