Syria Mine Action AoR Situation Update No. 6: 2025 - A year in review

Attachments

The 2025 Year in Review Situation Report captures one of the most critical and demanding years for mine action in Syria. Following major contextual shifts and large-scale population movements, civilians were exposed to unprecedented levels of explosive ordnance risk, with more than 870 EO-related incidents recorded nationwide and over 1,600 people killed or injured. As families returned home, cultivated contaminated land, and attempted to rebuild their lives, explosive ordnance remained a daily, life-threatening reality.

Against this backdrop, mine action partners delivered lifesaving results at exceptional scale—surveying over 2.9 billion m² of land, destroying more than 27,000 explosive items, and reaching over 787,000 people with risk education, despite severe access, security, and funding constraints. This report highlights the key events that shaped the response in 2025, the collective operational impact achieved across Syria, and the priorities for the year ahead, reaffirming that mine action is a prerequisite for safe humanitarian access, recovery, and reconstruction.

The Syria Mine Action AoR and partners extend sincere gratitude to donors for their continued support of lifesaving mine action activities across Syria. At the same time, the scale, persistence, and evolving nature of explosive ordnance contamination demand significantly increased and sustained investment. Without additional, predictable funding, the ability of mine action partners to keep pace with rising civilian exposure, enable safe returns, and support recovery will remain critically constrained.

A heartfelt gratitude to the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) for their continued support and collaboration - all MA AoR products have been produced jointly with INSO.
