Syria - Military escalation in the Northeast, update (DG ECHO, NES Forum) (ECHO Daily Flash of 22 January 2024)

  • The escalation of hostilities in Northeast Syria (NES) resulted in the interruption of fuel production and distribution. Most power and transfer stations have been targeted and are out of service by now.

  • The Alouk Water Station is completely cut off from the grid, and over 1 million people in eleven cities, 2,750 villages, and 1,900 schools are without electricity.

  • Fuel shortages are emerging, posing significant risks to humanitarian response, affecting staff movement, essential goods transport, and the functionality of life-saving health facilities and medical equipment. Over 600,000 IDPs across NES will soon lack cooking and heating fuel, exacerbating their suffering in harsh winter.

  • Humanitarian partners and actors are exploring temporary solutions and looking for donor’s support.
