Recent violence in the coastal provinces has resulted in numerous deaths, including among women, children, and medical workers, and considerable displacement. As of 9 March, more than 25,000 people have been displaced and are being hosted in Emergency Collective Centres while many others have crossed into Lebanon.
Humanitarian operations continue to be severely disrupted, with humanitarian missions to and within coastal areas suspended and aid workers instructed to remain indoors. Curfews and movement restrictions continue to hinder access to essential services.
Schools in Latakia and Tartous have been closed while there is urgent need for supplies and support to medical centres.
DG ECHO partners, including the Danish Red Cross and Syrian Arab Red Crescent, are delivering emergency humanitarian assistance such as WASH and health services, distribution of relief items and food, and dignified corpse management using refrigerated vehicle units.
The EU continues to call for protection of civilians and infrastructures, and safe and unimpeded humanitarian access in line with International Humanitarian Law.
