Highlights:
- Four AFP cases were detected from Hama, Damascus and Rural Damascus.
- During quarter two of 2016 nine workshops to train HWs in the newly recruited sentinel sites were conducted. Health workers of health directorates (Tartous, Aleppo, Qunaitra, Hama, and Sweida) and NGOs (Homs, Hama) were trained on EWARS program implementation. This has so far resulted in an increase in the number of sentinel sites, the number of sentinel sites increased from 1010 in Q1 and reach to 1100 by the end of Q2 of 2016. The reports of new sentinel sites will be entered to EWARS data base in July.
The Response
- Acute flaccid paralysis: Stool samples were collected from AFP cases and sent to the reference lab in Damascus. Laboratory test showed negative results for polio. Annualized AFP rate up to week 27 is (3.8); total number of reported AFP cases in 2016 is 139.
- Meningitis: Cases were managed according to the national protocol; and investigation forms were filled for some cases; it shows that most of the cases are viral meningitis not bacterial. Preventive therapy was provided as necessary for contacts of the probable bacterial meningitis.
