Syria - Escalation of hostilities in Idlib and western Aleppo (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, UN OCHA) (ECHO Daily Flash of 28 November 2024)

  • As of 27 November, Northern Syria has witnessed the most significant escalation of hostilities between the Government of Syria (GoS) and organised armed groups (OAG) since late September 2024. The "Deterring Aggression" operation, involving opposition factions Hay'at Tahrir Al-Sham (HTS) and the National Liberation Front (NLF), reportedly aims to protect opposition-held areas and deter attacks by the GoS and allies, whose activity has increased in recent months.
  • As of 28 November, OAG forces are positioned less than 10 km from Aleppo city, where GoS and Russian airstrikes and shelling continue.
  • Renewed fighting has worsened the already dire humanitarian situation, reportedly already displacing up to 45,000 people from around the frontlines. It is estimated that the hostilities could cause a new displacement of around 200 - 400 thousand Syrians.
  • Multiple educational institutions and over 24 health facilities have suspended services in Northwest Syria, while DG ECHO partners have suspended all non-life-saving activities and initiated emergency response plans, including crisis modifiers. DG ECHO continues to monitor the situation closely.
