Syria - Displacement of civilians (DG ECHO partners, UNDSS ) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 January 2022)

  • Intensifying violence in the city of Hassakeh, Northeast Syria, related to a prison break last week, reportedly killing more than 100 people, displaced some 5,500 families from the Gweiran area towards the center of Al Hassakeh City, with around 1,050 families arriving in the Damascus-controlled area of the city. Three collective shelters were opened late on 22 January.

  • While the ongoing security operation is restricting humanitarian movements, DG ECHO partners are providing mobile medical services and basic food items to displaced families, additional food and winterisation support is needed urgently.

  • According to UNICEF, the safety of some 850 children in detention is at risk due to the ongoing violence.
