Syria - Dam break and floods (NOAA-CPC, UN OCHA, media floodlist) (ECHO Daily Flash of 14 February 2023)

  • Following the earthquake in southern Türkiye on 6 February, a dam collapsed in north-western Syria, causing the overflow of the Orontes River, as recorded by UN OCHA. The flood event led to the displacements of people from the village of Al-Tlul (Salqin Nahiyah Subdistrict, Harem District, Idlib Governorate) to nearby camps as several houses have been submerged by water.
  • In addition, the same source reports, 7,000 evacuated people and 1,000 flooded houses across the nearby villages of Hardana, Delbiya, Jakara, and Hamziyeh due to the same event.
  • Heavy machinery has been deployed by the WASH partners to open channels and mitigate the flood in Al Tlul. For the next 24 hours, no rain is forecast across northwestern Syria, including the earthquake-affected Governorates.
