Highlights:

  • Conflict has severed supply lines to most besieged areas leading to extreme food shortages. As a result, in Darayya and Madamiyet Elsham fresh bread was sporadically available at an exorbitant cost of SYP 1500/bundle (30 times higher than the Damascus market price).

  • The average nominal retail prices of wheat flour and rice for February 2016 were SYP 253/kg and SYP 457/kg, respectively.
This represents an increase of 108% (wheat flour) and 101% (rice) compared to February 2015 prices.

  • In February 2016, the average price for diesel was SYP 312/L and SYP 4,662 for a cylinder of butane gas. Compared to the same month last year, the retail price of fuel is up by 76% for both diesel and a cylinder of butane gas.

  • The purchasing power of daily wage earners, as reflected by the terms-of-trade, decreased by 4.6% compared to August 2015 and by 14.2% compared to levels observed in February 2015.
