Situation Overview
A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Türkiye and northwest Syria on February 6th, 2023, causing widespread death and destruction. It was one of the most powerful earthquakes in the region in a century, and was followed by powerful aftershocks as well as another high-magnitude earthquake on February 20th. After 12 years of conflict and displacement, the earthquake has severely compounded the dire situation in northwest Syria. This flash report provides a summary of the emergency response and rehabilitation efforts undertaken by humanitarian NGO SARD.

Northwest Syria continues to face deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to protracted conflict, economic crisis, and the impact of recent earthquakes.

Approximately 4.1 million people are in urgent need of lifesaving assistance, including 2.7 million internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Emergency sites established as temporary shelters are currently accommodating 1.9 million IDPs, with a particular focus on supporting vulnerable women and children.

Numerous communities across 35 sub-districts in northwest Syria have been affected, leading to the partial or complete destruction of more than 10,600 buildings.
