Situation Overview

Crisis type: Fire

Cause: Widespread wildfires have impacted rural areas of Lattakia Governorate between 1 and 5 July 2025, and extended to Tartus and rural areas of Idleb and Hama, driven by a combination of extreme heat, prolonged drought, and strong winds. These environmental conditions have rapidly accelerated the spread of fire across forested and agricultural lands. Firefighting operations are facing significant operational constraints, notably the presence of unexploded ordnance and remnants of war, which pose serious risks to response teams and limited access to key fire zones. Additional challenges include rugged terrain, insufficient road access, and limited water availability for suppression efforts.

The situation remains volatile, with ongoing coordination between SARC, Civil Defense, and local authorities to respond to humanitarian needs and contain the fires.

An operations room was established by the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster to coordinate all response efforts, with SARC playing a central role in its activities.

Affected Areas:

Due to the wildfire season, fires were reported in several governorates including Rural Tartous, Rural Homs, and parts of Idleb. However, the situation escalated significantly in Lattakia Governorate, where the fires spread rapidly across multiple rural areas, causing the most extensive damage and displacement.
