July 29th, 2025 ― Doha, Qatar: Concluding eight months of humanitarian efforts, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has completed a project to back orphans and their families in northern Syria.
Implemented in cooperation with Ataa Humanitarian Relief Association, the project was aimed at improving the living and educational conditions of more than 3,000 orphaned children from approximately 1,000 families, with a whole set of interventions, including food and educational support, along with infrastructure rehabilitation of orphanages.
To alleviate the burdens facing the families with orphans amid difficult conditions in the region, five orphanages in Aleppo Governorate were rehabilitated, for the benefit of 400 orphans and their families.
Rehabilitation works included (1) upgrading of infrastructure (maintenance of walls, windows, bathrooms, and kitchens); (2) replacing electricity, water, and sewage networks; and (3) provision of the basic equipment and supplies to ensure a safe and healthy environment for children.
To ensure the continuity of the orphanages, QRCS paid for the necessary operational costs, including electricity and water bills, heating, internet (for educational purposes), and staff remunerations, enabling the homes to keep serving the orphans.
E-coupons were distributed to the families of orphans to purchase basic food items such as rice, legumes, dairy products, meat, vegetables, and canned goods, in addition to seasonal clothing rations for orphans.
Also, the project involved educational support for children, by providing stationery, textbooks, and transportation costs, thus ensuring a stable learning environment that encourages them to continue their education.
A closing ceremony was held in Azaz City to honor more than 500 orphans and their families, attended by representatives of QRCS, local partners, and children’s families. Another ceremony was held in Al-Bab City, where the remaining beneficiaries were honored.

About Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS)
Established in 1978, Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) is Qatar’s first humanitarian and volunteering organization that aims to assist and empower vulnerable individuals and communities without partiality or discrimination.
QRCS is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which consists of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and 191 National Societies. It is also a member of several GCC, Arab, and Islamic organizations, such as the Islamic Committee of International Crescent (ICIC) and the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO). In this legally recognized capacity, QRCS has access to disaster and conflict zones, thus serving as an auxiliary to the State of Qatar in its humanitarian and social efforts — a role that distinguishes it from other local charities and NGOs.
Both locally and internationally, QRCS has relief and development operations in numerous countries throughout the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Central and South America. Its humanitarian mandates include disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and risk reduction. To mitigate the impact of disasters and improve the livelihoods of affected populations, QRCS provides medical services, food, water, shelter, and other needs of local communities. It is also active at the humanitarian diplomacy and advocacy front.
With the help of a vast network of trained, committed staff and volunteers, QRCS aspires to improve the lives of vulnerable people by mobilizing the power of humanity, inspired by the seven Fundamental Principles of humanitarian action: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality.
