PAH to provide more aid to Syria

With the conflict in Syria escalating, beginning September Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH) has been increasing the range and volume of its humanitarian activities. Apart from everyday deliveries of bread and drinking water, the most vulnerable Syrian families in Idleb and Hama will be provided with professional medical help, as well as NFI (non-food item) kits.

The number of Syrians looking for safe shelter, food and water grows with each passing week. According to UN estimates there are already two million refugees, and a third of Syrian population requires humanitarian aid. Therefore, PAH is expanding the volume of aid provided to the victims of this conflict. Since June PAH has been providing bread vouchers to over 6000 people and trucking water to 1000 people inhabiting caves, ruins and collective centres full of internally displaced families. Beginning September the organisation will increase the number of beneficiaries to respectively 10 and 7 thousand people. Furthermore, the most vulnerable of them will receive food baskets, as well as metal tanks for water storage. In the coming weeks another several thousand families will be provided with NFI kits, enabling them to maintain their households, including sanitary products, water treatment products and sandfly nets, which are essential in preventing the spread of leishmaniasis.

Moreover, in the short term PAH shall support nurses and in the long term a mobile clinic to reach out to the internally displaced living in appalling conditions in caves, ruins and collective centres, with little access to healthcare. Their task will be to provide professional medical help to the war’s victims living in the toughest conditions, with particular attention paid to women and infants.

Since the beginning of this year PAH has been helping approximately 15 thousand people and aims to double the number by the end of the year, as the need for humanitarian aid in Syria keeps on growing.

The activities and delivery of aid by PAH in Syria are possible thanks to the generosity of the Polish society, but also thanks to other organisations such as, among others, Caritas Czech Republic and GOAL.
