Northwest Syria - Border closure for humanitarian access (DG ECHO Partners, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 02 July 2024)

  • Following reports of sexual harassment of a child in the city of Kayseri in Türkiye on 30 June, reportedly by a Syrian national, protesters started burning vehicles and workplaces of Syrian refugees.
  • In response to the incidents, Syrians in Northwest Syria have been blocking the border crossings of Bal al Hawa, Bab al Salamah, Jaralablus and Ar-Ra’i, stopping trucks and vehicles with Turkish plates to enter Syria, and taking down Turkish flags in several locations. All border crossings to Northwest Syria remain closed until further notice. More than 4 million people rely on cross-border assistance in northwest Syria.
  • Riots and anti-Türkiye protests erupted in several parts of Northwest Syria, including attacks on Turkish Armed Forces posts. Four people were reportedly killed in Afrin in the clashes between armed protesters and Turkish forces.
  • Reports over upset groups demanding Turkish Armed Forces to withdraw from Northwest Syria were received. The consent agreement for cross-border humanitarian access through Bab al Hawa is currently running until 13 July,
  • DG ECHO is monitoring the situation and impact on humanitarian access and operation.
