North-West Syria – Flooding in Displacement Camps (DG ECHO, DG ECHO Partners, UN OCHA, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 21 January 2026)

  • Between 11 and 13 January, heavy rainfall affected multiple IDP sites across Aleppo and Idleb countryside, causing damage to tents, shelters and properties.
  • According to the Camp Coordination and Camp Management Cluster, some 80 IDP sites were impacted, affecting around 68 000 IDP (13 000 families). Around 4 000 shelters and tents were damaged, while more than 220 were fully destroyed.
  • The floods occurred less than two weeks after a severe snowstorm which already damaged nearly 5 000 shelters and affected around 158 000 people across 90 IDP sites in Aleppo Governorate, further exacerbating vulnerabilities.
  • Priority needs include the replacement of damaged tents, plastic sheets and insulation materials, raising tent flooring in flood-prone camps, winter assistance, heating materials and non-food item kits.
  • DG ECHO partners are responding through Crisis Modifiers and other available funding to address urgent needs in the affected camps.
