Situation Overview
In Northeast Syria, individuals are moving from emergency collective centers to host communities.
As of January 8, a total of 24,400 people were recorded in 199 active emergency collective centers.
Access to electricity and water remains a barrier in Menbij and Kobani sub-districts due to the continued fighting around Tishreen Dam and Khafsa station. More than 413,000 individuals living in these areas have been deprived of water and electricity for 35 days.
SSWG
Needs:
There are currently 199 open E-CCs, housing some 24,400 individuals.
While the E-CCs offer a temporary solution for these households, the objective should be to move them out of the closed-down schools while avoiding further encampment.
Response:
Multisectoral activities are ongoing, ensuring that displaced households receive broad support, including some rehabilitation in the shelters they are living in.
Now is the time to prioritize community-based responses, and reduce further encampment, while ensuring that children can go back to their previously closed-down schools after the January winter break. Consequently, exit strategies are being explored.
Gaps & Constraints:
Alternatives to E-CCs are limited, while the absence of a political solution for NES dampens the appetite to commit to longer-term interventions.
