Funded by USAID, iMMAP’s Information Management Resource Center project conducted a mapping study of wheat-flour to bread processing facilities across northwest Syria. The study was carried out during the second quarter of 2021.

In partnership with the Whole of Syria Food Security Sector, the Wheat-Flour to Bread Processing Facilities Mapping Study Summary is aimed at providing stakeholders with a brief understanding of the status and conditions of the various wheat-flour to bread processing facilities, such as bakeries, mills and silos that are located across northwest Syria. A total of 368 facilities across 37 sub-districts in northwest Syria were assessed.

The study also explored the capacity and functionality of the assessed wheat-flour to bread processing facilities, recorded existing gaps in bread production, main bread production barriers, and highlighted the accessibility and affordability of bread across northwest Syria. The study highlighted several key findings, including the following:

  • Only 66% of the standard daily minimum bread needs per individual was being met across northwest Syria.

  • The average reported selling price of 1 kg of bread dropped by 28% between the first and second quarters of 2021.

  • The overall quantity of produced bread across northwest Syria dropped by 11% between the first and second quarters of 2021.

  • The report noted a 149% increase in the availability of free-bread distribution programs across northwest Syria.

Along with the key findings and comprehensive analysis, the study also provided recommendations for more integration and collaborations among stakeholders involved in the wheat-flour to bread market sector to synergize for better efficiency and productivity within the bread programs across northwest Syria.
