Located in northeastern Syria, in an area under the de facto authority of the Autonomous Administration of Northeast Syria (AANES), al-Hol camp is run by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), a Kurdish-led non-State armed group. Despite the lack of clear verified data, some of the most recent figures indicate that the camp population stands at around 49,100 persons (approximately 15,000 women, 3,000 men, and 31,000 children) as of July 2023.

Al-Hol is organised around different categories of people, each housed in one of six sections:

• Syrian families with suspected ties to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) members;

• Displaced Syrians with no alleged ties to ISIL;

• Iraqi refugees;

• Two sections with third country nationals (one for European families of ISIL members and another for families of ISIL members of other nationalities); and

• A mixture of Syrian and Iraqi families.
