UNDER-SECRETARY-GENERAL (USG) FOR HUMANITARIAN AFFAIRS AND EMERGENCY RELIEF COORDINATOR (ERC) MR MARTIN GRIFFITHS, BRIEFING TO THE UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL (UNSC) ON THE HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN SYRIA
On 29 June, the ERC spoke before the UNSC on the humanitarian situation in Syria following his recent regional visit to Jordan and Syria.
Mr Griffiths briefed on his mission to Syria and on humanitarian challenges that people in the country are facing, adding that this year’s Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP), the largest in the world at $5.4 billion, is less than 12 per cent funded. This deficit has forced the World Food Programme (WFP) to slash its emergency food aid in Syria in July by 40 per cent. In addition, UNRWA only has funds for 18 per cent of its annual budget, the lowest since the crisis began in 2011.
Further, the USG flagged that the UNSC resolution on cross-border assistance would expire on 10 July.
