The crisis in Yarmouk camp, 8 May 2014

Our spokesperson Chris Gunness has the following to say on the situation in Yarmouk Camp

"UNRWA was not able to distribute food parcels in Yarmouk on 8 May, due to renewed armed clashes in the area. The UNRWA team arrived at the Bateekhah northern entrance at 10:20 as clashes were taking place inside Yarmouk, close to the distribution area. On request of the authorities, the UNRWA team departed the area at 10:45, returning safely to the UNRWA Office.

"UNRWA is deeply concerned that, after eight days of distribution, armed conflict has once again interrupted humanitarian operations in Yarmouk. For the sake of over 18,000 trapped civilians in the area, UNRWA reiterates its demand that all parties cease hostilities and work to ensure the immediate resumption and expansion of desperately needed humanitarian distributions inside Yarmouk.
