Yellow Fever Outbreak in Darfur, Sudan - Situation Report No 11, 1 December 2012

Highlights

  • As of 30 November 2012, the coverage of yellow fever vaccination campaigns has reached more than half of its targeted population - 79% in West Darfur, 56% in Central Darfur, 65.3% in North Darfur and 64.5% in South Darfur.

  • The outbreak has now affected 32 localities in Central, South, West, North, and East Darfur. As of 30 November 2012, the total number of suspected cases has reached 677, including 164 deaths (case fatality rate of 24.2%).

  • The Federal Ministry of Health(FMoH), with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), submitted a request for additional doses of yellow fever vaccine from the International Coordination Group (ICG). The ICG has approved the release of 1,341,694 doses of yellow fever vaccine and injection materials to cover vaccination campaign targeting a population of approximately 1.21 million in Greater Nyala, Forbaranga, Shataia, Bendacy and Mokjar.

  • Preparations are underway for the second phase of the vaccination campaign with support from non-government organizations working in targeted localities.
